Chemistry is an interdisciplinary science related to all fields of Science and Technology. Engineering Chemistry is a subject included for First year students as per VTU curriculum. It deals with the fundamental concepts of Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, Physical and Bio Chemistry.

Through substantial scientific experiences, the study of chemistry provides students with knowledge of what chemistry is and how it contributes to understanding the evidences leading to the birth of universe. Students are going to perform the experiments based on the theoretical instructions like chemical facts, principles and methods to solve technological problems, equation and their reactions etc. related to each experiments given in the class room.

Extra work is assigned to encourage the students to make presentations on Chemistry and Technical topics from the literature. Titles of some student presentations are given below.

  • Latest Technology applied in I C Engines in the field of Automobile Science
  • DNA Technology,
  • Air pollution
  • Brain chip Technology
  • Conjoined Twins

Research Interests:

  • Electrochemistry at modified surfaces
  • Coordination of transition metal complexes
  • Science education
  • Organometallic Chemistry
  • Conducting polymers.

Department facilities:

The department of chemistry is situated in the ground floor of GM Institute of Technology, has well equipped Chemistry laboratory to support instruction in analytical, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry. We have sophisticated instruments. Graduated glassware’s and highly purified chemicals purchased for conducting experiments.

List of Instruments for imparting practical knowledge:

  • Absorption spectrometer (colorimeter): is a very sensitive instrument for the determination Iron, Copper and Fluoride even in lower concentration by applying Beer – Lambert’s law.

  • Conductivity Bridge: It is used for the Acid – base titration without using indicator to get the accuracy by plotting the graph conductivity v/s volume of Base

  • Potentiometer: It is versatile instrument is used for the determination of redox, acid –base titration. Using NErnst equation and by plotting the graph EMF v/s volume of oxidizing agent.

  • pH meter: It is used for the determination H+ Ion concentration.

  • Ostwald’s viscometer: used for determination of viscosity coefficient of various organic liquids and molecular weight of polymers.

  • Magnetic stirrer: used to homogenize the solution.

  • Electronic balance: Electrodes like calomel, Glass, Platinum, silver, conductivity cell etc.
